Chemical weapons claim A ‘pretext’: says khamenei

TEHRAN: Allegations that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons last month are a “pretext” by the West to attack the country,Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Thursday. Iran is Syria’s main regional ally. Washington and its allies “are using the chemical weapon (allegation) as a pretext,” and “are saying that they want to intervene for humanitarian reasons,” said Khamenei. PTI

UN Syria envoy to press G20 leaders on peace conference

ST PETERSBURG: The UN special envoy for Syria,Lakhdar Brahimi,will hold discussions on the sidelines of the G20 summit to push for an international conference to be held on ending Syria’s civil war. “While the world is focused on possible use of chemical weapons we must push even harder for the International Conference on Syria to take place in Geneva,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said. Russian ships near Syria to evacuate civilians

ST PETERSBURG: The Kremlin’s chief of staff says Russia has been sending warships to the Mediterranean Sea for possible evacuation of Russian citizens from Syria. Russian news agencies on Thursday quoted Sergei Ivanov as saying that Russia has been boosting its naval presence in the Mediterranean “primarily” in order to organise a possible evacuation of Russians from Syria. ap
