The son-in-law of Independent Rajya Sabha candidate from Jharkhand Raj Kumar Agarwal has told the Income Tax department that the Rs 2.15 crore seized from a vehicle just hours before the voting on March 30 was his and that the cash was meant for purchase of a plot of land.

Sumitra Shah’s statement followed that of his father R K Shah, owner of Jamshedpur-based company Shah Sponge and Power Ltd,who said they had sent the money in the Innova car with his company’s accountant Sudhanshu Tripathi.

R K Shah had said the cash was to be handed over to one Arun Khandelwal in Ranchi, who in turn was supposed to hand it over to Sanjay Singh,a land broker,to make payment for the plot in Chandil, near Jamshedpur.

The seizure of the case had led to the Election Commission countermanding the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand.
