Cabinet may hike MSP for kharif crops today

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is likely to consider a proposal to hike the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy by Rs 60 a quintal on Thursday. Among MSP revision for other kharif crops,the Cabinet may also hike the support price for Arhar by Rs 450.

The agriculture ministry has proposed MSP hike for common grade paddy from Rs 1,250 a quintal to Rs 1,310. It also wants a five per cent MSP hike for grade A paddy to Rs 1,345 a quintal.

While the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices had suggested keeping the MSP for Arhar at previous year’s level of Rs 3,850 a quintal,the ministry has proposed over 11 per cent hike to make it Rs 4,300 to bring parity with other pulses.

The ministry has accepted the CACP proposal for a Rs 300 hike in the MSP of oilseeds like groundnut,soyabean and sesamum. It has proposed MSP of Rs 4,000 a quintal for groundnut-in-shell,Rs 2,500 for soyabean and Rs 4,500 for sesamum.

For cotton,it has proposed Rs 100 a quintal hike for both medium staple (at Rs 3,700 a quintal) and long staple (Rs 4,000) varieties.
