NEW DELHI: Underlining the increasing importance of submarines in the naval fleet,Vice Admiral Pradeep K Chatterjee has become the first ever submariner to take over as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. Chatterjee,who has been given charge of the Navy’s Operations Branch,has commanded INS Shankush and INS Shankul submarines.

Two Akash missiles successfully tested

BALASORE: India on Friday successfully test-fired two of its indigenous surface-to-air Air-Force version Akash missiles with a 25-km strike range from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near here. The anti-aircraft missiles,capable of carrying warhead of 60 kg,were fired from a mobile launcher.

Woman burns self,kid to death

RAJKOT: A woman set her six-year-old son and herself ablaze after her husband reportedly hanged himself at their house in Rajkot city on Thursday night.All three died,the police said,adding that they were trying to find out the reason behind the incident. The deceased were identified as Dhaval Makwana (32),Aarti (28) and Nil.

Shootout at Pabitora wildlife sanctuary

MORIGAON: Forest guards exchanged fire with poachers from Nagaland inside Pabitora wildlife sanctuary in Assam on Friday. Sources said that four poachers entered the Diplung forest range inside the sanctuary around 3 am. Three of them were caught while one escaped. Pabitora houses 86 endangered one-horned rhinos.

Hizb-ul-Mujahideen man held in Valley

SRINAGAR: Hilal Ahmad Peer,an alleged Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant,was arrested in Baramulla district of Kashmir and a cache of arms and ammunition recovered from him,the police said on Friday. Peer was arrested from Tarzoo village near Sopore late on Thursday.

Chhattisgarh: Ten killed in accident

RAIPUR: Ten people were killed as a truck carrying a marriage party fell off a bridge in Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh,the police said on Friday. They said the driver lost control of the vehicle,which was loaded with iron ore and was carrying 27 people atop. Chief Minister Raman Singh declared a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
