Thiruvananthapuram: Two fishermen were feared killed off the Kochi coast on Wednesday after a foreign merchant vessel opened fire on them,mistaking their boat to be that of pirates. The foreign vessel,identified as Enrica Lexie,reported the incident to the Indian authorities,said Navy sources in Kochi. Coast Guard had launched two ships and an aircraft to pursue the ship,which has been located and asked to come to anchorage off Kochi for investigation,said the Navy. The dead fishermen,from Tamil Nadu,had left from Neendakara fishing harbour in Kollam district.

President to flag off education yatra

NEW DELHI: President Pratibha Patil will flag off a Saakshar Bharat Yatra on February 18,for promoting the government’s adult education programme. Train-vehicle mishap: 2 killed,1 injured

DHUBRI: Two persons were killed and another was critically injured when the Dhubri-Kamakhya Passenger rammed into their vehicle at an unmanned level crossing in lower Assam’s Dhubri district on Wednesday. The train,coming from Guwahati,hit the vehicle as the four-wheeler was crossing the tracks at Modergola between Dhubri and Gauripur around 7.30 am,officials said.

DU student commits suicide in UP

MUZAFFARNAGAR: Three persons,including a Delhi University student,allegedly committed suicide in separate incidents in this district. DU student Monika Sharma,22,hanged herself Tuesday evening because of depression,police said. Another woman Farzana,48,died after consuming poison due to poverty while Mangey,25,jumped into a canal.

Rajasthan: Charred body found in car

JAIPUR: An unidentified charred body was on Wednesday found in a car,which was also burnt,in Dausa district of Rajasthan. The car was spotted near a shop in Sikandra town. They informed the police following which the charred body was found. The police said probe was on.
