J-K cop among 3 arrested with hawala money

JAMMU: Three persons,including a police constable,were arrested from the outskirts of Jammu for alleged involvement in a hawala racket and Rs 5 lakh was seized from their possession on Saturday. Acting on a tip off,a joint team of Special Operation Group Jammu and Nagrota police intercepted their vehicle on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The three arrested were identified as police constable Zahid Latif,Taslim Arfan and Rakesh Kumar – all residents of Jammu. A case has been registered.

Two dead as family attempts suicide

JAIPUR: A woman and her minor daughter were killed while her husband survived a collective suicide attemptin Mount Abu in Rajasthan’s Sirohi district,police said.

After alighting from a bus,the couple went to an isolated area near the Abu bus stand and consumed poison. They also administered it to their six-year-old daughter. They were later spotted lying in an unconscious state and the police were informed. Efforts are being made to ascertain their identity.

Two killed,13 held in Orissa clash

JAJPUR: Two persons were killed in a clash between

two groups at a village in Orissa’s Jajpur district after which police arrested 13 people on Sunday,the police said. About 12 people attacked some members of the rival group at Bhalinuagaon,critically injuring Akuli Mallick (40) who died on way to hospital late on Saturday night. Soon after his death,angry members of his group retaliated and launched a counter-attack killing Digambar Mallick (50) in the wee hours on Sunday. The police seized both the bodies and sent them for post-mortem to the district headquarter hospital.

Second leak in IOC pipeline,supply hit

JAIPUR: Over 20,000 litres

of crude oil leaked on Sunday from a crack in the state-owned Indian Oil Corporation’s pipeline here,a day after a

similar leak in the city. Panic gripped the Sitapura area,which witnessed the disastrous fire in an IOC fuel depot in 2009. The pipeline leakage was traced near a valve inside the premises of the IOC’s

pump house and the crude oil spilled in the industrial area. The situation,however,was brought under control and efforts made to restore the pipeline.

Leopard on prowl,kills 26 goats

UDHAGAMANDALAM: Panic gripped the Kanthal area here after a leopard entered human habitat and killed 26 goats in the cattle shed of a farmer in the early hours of Sunday.

The farmer got up hearing the bleat of goats and found the leopard devouring the goats. However,after some time,the leopard went back into the forest area.

Ma Mati Manush at Kolkata traffic junctions

Kolkata: In addition to Tagore songs,pedestrians and motorists in the city are now being treated to a song glorifying the theme “Ma Mati Manush” at traffic intersections to commemorate the completion of the first year of the Mamata Banerjee government.

The song,focussing on communal harmony,bridging urban-rural divide and betterment of farmers and women,is also being played over FM radio stations in the city.
