Chikungunya outbreak feared in Orissa village

BERHAMPUR: Chikungunya is feared to have resurfaced in Orissa’s Ganjam district with several people in Boxipalli village showing symptoms of the mosquito-borne viral disease. “A team of doctors led by the district malaria officer,along with the paramedical staff,have gone to the affected village on Saturday to provide treatment and collect blood samples to confirm the disease,” Chief District Medical Officer S K Patnaik said. The outbreak of the disease in Boxipalli,with predominantly fishermen population,was reported two days ago.

One dead,four injured in UP clash

LUCKNOW: One person was killed and four,including two women,were injured in a clash between two groups in the Sikrara area of Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district on Sunday. Old rivalry was believed to be the reason behind the clash,which erupted in Gohda village,the police said,adding that the injured had been admitted to a local hospital. An FIR has been registered but no arrests have been made so far.

Four killed in highway mishap

BIKANER: Four persons were killed and six injured when two vehicles caught fire after a head-on collision on the Bikaner-Jodhpur highway here on Sunday. All of those killed in the mishap were travelling by jeep that collided with a truck in the Deshnok police station circle jurisdiction. The injured have been rushed to a hospital and their condition is stated to be critical.

Two held for betting on IPL matches

BANGALORE: Two persons were arrested here on Saturday on charges of betting on the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket matches. The City Crime Branch police personnel also seized two television sets,mobile phones and Rs 3 lakh from them.

Businessman shot dead in Assam

Dhubri: A wholesale trader was shot dead by two assailants at Chowkbazaar in Dhubri district on Sunday. The assailants stormed into the wholesale grocery shop of 62-year-old Jhumurmal Jain and opened fire at him. The trader died on the spot. Local people managed to catch one assailant,identified as Mohd Islam,and handed him over to the police,but the other managed to escape. The police also recovered a pistol from Mohd Islam.

Four ULFA militants nabbed from Majuli

JORHAT: Four suspected militants of the anti-talks faction of ULFA ,including a woman,were apprehended by the security forces in Assam’s Jorhat district,police said on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off,the police and CRPF personnel raided four different places in Majuli and apprehended the four militants on Saturday night. The militants have been identified as Nayan Mudoi,Pramod Hazarika,Bapukon Hazarika and Junali Hazarika.

Mild quake in Kutch,no loss reported

AHMEDABAD: Mild tremors measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale were felt on Sunday morning in Kutch district,officials said here. The earthquake had its epicentre 34 km northwest of Khavada village in Kutch,officials at the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said. Aftershocks measuring 2.3 on the Richter scale were felt in the afternoon around 3 pm. According to the officials,no loss of life or damage to property was reported.
