Bengal boat capsize death toll climbs to 10

MALDA: The rescue operation following the boat capsize here ended with the recovery of one more body,taking the death toll to 10,official sources said Sunday. The body was recovered late Saturday night,District Magistrate G Kirankumar said. The boat,ferrying 50 daily labourers and farmers,capsized in the Ganga on June 14. Five teams took part in the rescue operation.

Three cops held for smuggling illicit arms

LUCKNOW: Three policemen allegedly involved in the smuggling of illicit arms and ammunition were arrested by the Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh Police in Hamirpur district,the police said. They have been identified as Satya Prakash Tiwari,Jahan Singh and Brijendra Singh. Firearms,including two carbine and a rifle with cartridges,were recovered from them. The police said the three would be suspended.

Arunachal ex-minister killed in mishap

ITANAGAR: Former Arunachal Minister Wangnia Pongte was killed in an accident at Dhemaji in Assam Saturday. Pongte,60,was rushed to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital,where he was declared dead,official sources said. Pongte is survived by his wife,two daughters and two sons. The state government declared state mourning Sunday.

11 kg smuggled gold seized in Tamil Nadu

NAGAPATTINAM: Eleven kg gold,allegedly smuggled from Sri Lanka,was seized and two persons were arrested in this connection by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.
