PUDUCHERRY: Five persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the January 27 violence leading to the lynching of an executive of a factory by workers in Yanam,an enclave of the UT,following labour unrest,the police said. They were arrested for their alleged role in the killing of vice-president of Regency Ceramics K C Chandrasekhar. All were remanded in 15 days judicial custody.

Inmates hold staff hostage in Varanasi

LUCKNOW: Tension broke out in Varanasi Central Jail on Wednesday,where inmates held hostage two of the jail staff,including the superintendent,and pelted stones at them. Four persons,including jail doctor Dr Suresh,suffered head injuries. Inmates were protesting the alleged plan to shift the visitors’ hall.

PIL to cover Indira,Rajiv statues rejected

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday struck down a PIL seeking directions for covering statues of Jawaharlal Nehru,Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh as they may help the Congress “derive” political mileage during the Assembly polls. A Division Bench struck down the PIL by Allahabad-based Adivasi Samajotthan Evam Kalyan Samiti.

Mathai to visit US,Iran likely on agenda

NEW DELHI: Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai will visit Washington next week, his first official visit to the US after taking over the post,and will discuss a host of issues,reportedly including Iran,with his counterpart Under Secretary-Political Affairs Wendy Sherman. While details have not been shared,the External Affairs Ministry has said that Mathai will be travelling from February 6 to 8.

Anna stable,to be discharged today

GURGAON: Anna Hazare will be discharged from the Medanta Medicity hospital,where he has been undergoing treatment since Sunday,on Thursday. This comes after doctors found his condition stable after conducting various tests. Sources said the 74-year-old veteran will go to Bangalore for further treatment.
