The Maharashtra unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to contest all 227 civic body seats in Mumbai. State BSP leaders said they are in the process of selecting candidates for BMC elections.

The party has one sitting woman corporator in Mumbai from Mahim-Kala Killa ward. The BSP is also keen on contesting in the other nine municipal corporations which go to polls on February 16.

BSP leaders have requested Mayawati to address at least one rally in Mumbai to give a boost to their campaign. Last year, she had addressed a rally at NESCO grounds when she inaugurated a new party office in Chembur. “We have requested her,but cannot press for it as there are elections in UP as well. We are trying for one rally in Mumbai,” said BSP state chief Vilas Garud.

Garud said they are identifying candidates in all parts of the city, but the only hurdle is ensuring that candidates have caste validity certificates. “We will be fighting all the seats in Mumbai and are confident of increasing our representation,” said Garud.
