Eight public meetings and over 15 roadside interactions in just one constituency, reminding people of Rahul Gandhi’s hard work,in contrast with “opportunism” and “corruption” of others. This is how Priyanka Gandhi Vadra began her election campaign in Assembly seats falling in the Lok Sabha seats of her brother on Friday.

While Priyanka has campaigned in Rae Bareli and Amethi earlier too,her tone is more aggressive this time and she is taking up one seat at a time, block by block. She began from Gauriganj, which was won by BSP’s Chandra Prakash Mishra ‘Matiyari’ in 2007. The BSP has again fielded him and the Congress has repeated Mohd Naeem.

“Before the 2007 elections also,I had come to you seeking votes but you did not listen to me and see what you got in return. Did your MLA ever come back to you? While the Centre built roads and provided you water, your MLA built a palatial house with the money meant for you,” Priyanka told the gathering at Balbhadrapur.

She reminded people how Rahul had been touring UP to bring about change. “You know how Rahul is,he is stubborn. He is touring the entire state because he wants that you should wake up and change UP. He is not bothered about election results.”

Politics in UP had become “dirty”,she said, and “corruption, lawlessness and opportunist leaders are the biggest enemies of the people”. “After seeing politics of caste and religion for the past 22 years and begging for your rights, the time has come to wake up.”

Repeating the Congress slogan,“Udho,Jago,Badlo”,Priyanka said she would not give long speeches and just requested the listeners to go back and spread the massage.

Sources said Priyanka would camp in Amethi and Rae Bareli for five days and take up 10 assembly seats in both the areas one by one. Gauriganj would go to polls on February 15. On Saturday, she would cover Jagdishpur.

Congress changes Bhongaon nominee

The Congress on Friday changed its candidate from Bhongaon — Rakesh Kumari alias Rashmi Rajput in place of Brijesh Kumar Yadav — that will go to polls on February 23. “The Central Election Committee has selected the candidature of Rakesh Kumari alias Rashmi Rajput from Bhongaon constituency,” the party said in a press release.
