In a bizarre, and rather controversial move,a BJP MLA has suggested that the armys Gurkha or Naga regiments should be deployed to tackle the menace of monkeys in Himachal.
If Gurkha or Naga regiments are posted in cantonments in Himachal from time to time,it will definitely have an impact on the population of monkeys, Ravinder Ravi said because,he claimed, monkey is a delicacy for Nagas and Gurkhas.
Ravi made the suggestion during a debate in the assembly on a private members resolution demanding that the government find a lasting solution to the menace of monkeys and stray animals. He claimed it was time to find an out-of-the-box solution.
The state has been left with the option of sterilisation to deal with the menace after the HC banned killing of monkeys that enter fields and destroy crops, mainly in Shimla,Solan,Sirmaur,Bilaspur,Hamirpur,Una,Mandi and Kangra. Such is the fear of monkeys there are 3,17,112 of them, according to the wildlife department that some farmers have stopped cultivation,Ravi said. So the government,he urged, should approach the defence ministry. If Gurkha and Naga regiments keep coming for at least three years,it will solve a number of problems as even black dogs are a favourite food of Gurkhas and this will help maintain ecological balance.
Ravi said,in the past a regiment was posted in Holta near Palampur for three years and there was significant drop in the population of monkeys.
