A BJP district president Junior Lamin and two others from Manipur were arrested by the Jaintia Hills Police on Monday for possessing a kilogram of uranium ore. The uranium ore was recovered from the house of Singlkienkung Zote,among the three arrested,at Mooralong in Jowai.
Jaintia Hills SP M K Singh said the arrest was made in a joint operation carried out by the Jaintia Hills Police and Assam Rifles. He said: The Assam Rifles had filed an FIR in connection with the uranium theft.
Singh said that Singlienkung Zote and Singlienkung B Lalmingthang,both from Manipur,intended to take the uranium ore to Manipur. They wanted to sell the uranium ore in Manipur,he said. The police were still trying to find out whether the two had intention of selling it to any underground outfit,he added.
Junior Lamin,a resident of Jaintia Hills,had contested the last Jaintia Hills District Council election but lost,Singh said.
Last year,police had arrested nine persons in connection with uranium ore theft. In September,2008 West Khasi Hills Police had arrested four persons for attempting to sell a kilogram of uranium ore. The Shillong Police,in May,had arrested five persons while trying to sell a kilogram of yellow cake for Rs 26 lakh to a police decoy. The police was astonished as the packet containing the yellow cake – uranium ore- had the seal of the Atomic Energy Department and Government of India on it.
