In the midst of a major embarrassment following the arrest of an MLA by the Karnataka Lokayukta police in a corruption case, the ruling BJP in Karnataka on Saturday announced the induction of the former head of the anti-corruption agency as member of the party. BJP state party chief D V Sadananda Gowda announced that Justice M Venkatachala will join the party.

Retired Justice Venkatachala preceded the incumbent Lokayukta Justice Santhosh Hegde and had gained popularity for a crusader-like character that he brought to the quasi judicial agency following widely publicised anti-corruption raids on Government staff across the state.

The induction of Venkatachala into the BJP is being seen as a damage control measure initiated by the party following the arrest of its MLA from Kolar Gold Fields,Y Sampangi, while he was receiving Rs 5 lakh as bribe.
