Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Rahul Sharma allegedly killed himself with his service revolver on Monday afternoon. The 37-year-old’s body was recovered from his room at Police Officers’ Sadan where he lived.

While the police are calling it a suicide,the reason is not known yet. “We lost an able officer. We do not yet know why he took the extreme step. Investigations are on,” said ADG (Naxal) Ramniwas. The bullet wound was right above his eyes,on his forehead. “He fired a shot at his temporal region. The wound was visible,” said IG G P Singh.

Around 12.30 pm,Sharma’s gunner heard bullet shots from the officer’s room and found him lying in a pool of blood there. Sharma was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. He is survived by two sons and wife Gayatri Sharma,an officer with the Indian Railways. Top officials,including Home Minister Nanki Ram Kanwar,rushed to Bilaspur to take stock of the situation.

Nearly three months ago,Sharma had got himself transferred from Raigarh to Bilaspur as Gayatri was posted in the city. “He was on leave till March 14,but today he called me to say that he has joined. I spoke to him last around 11.45 am,” Singh said.

DGP (Home Guards) Vishwaranjan said: “He was an officer of immense courage,could withstand any pressure.” An IPS of 2002 batch,Sharma was posted in Dantewada for two years and had an exemplary record,according to his seniors.
