The Bihar government on Thursday sacked 151 primary teachers for failing competency test twice. The competency test, which has class 5-level questions, has to be cleared by all selected teachers once during their entire career. A teacher can get maximum two chances to clear the test.

Last year,8,884 primary teachers (panchayat teachers on contract) had failed the test.

Primary education director Ashutosh said,“We fired teachers for failing the test.”

Primary teachers are being hired on contract since 2006 amid criticism that the government was compromising with the quality of education.

Teachers are hired on the basis of the marks they obtained in matriculation, intermediate and graduation levels. Ashutosh said that the HRD department had taken a decision to

ensure the quality of education through holding these tests.

He said State Council of Education Research and Training conducts such examinations at regular intervals, preferably every six months.

Sample some questions of last year’s test: On which day Raksha Bandhan falls? Which planet is closest to the Sun?

An SCERT official said that the 100-mark paper has objective-type questions with four choices from mathematics, science,English and Hindi.
