While the IPL matches in Jaipur were being closely watched by teams of Mumbai and Delhi police without the knowledge of the local police, teams of Jaipur police were in hot pursuit of bookies operating across the state capital. Following several raids, they ran into bookies who had designed an elaborate set-up in rented accommodations, almost creating a “mini telephone exchange that could handle 500 calls at a time”,officials said.

The bookies had turned residential flats into elaborate betting dens with high-tech gadgets. A rented flat in Shyam Nagar threw up a huge betting set-up with advanced technology being used. High-tech equipment and heavy transmission systems were used to handle as many as 500 calls at a time and 148 SIM cards helped facilitate the simultaneous calls, the police said.

Similar set-ups were traced in 16 locations in the city where bookies on big match days locked the flats from outside to mislead neighbours that the houses were vacant.

Additional Commissioner of Police Giriraj Meena, who has been working closely on the case, told The Indian Express,“The raids came as a shocker as we found bookies operating out of rented flats in residential areas. So far 17 cases have been registered and around 60 persons have been arrested in connection with the case. At every location the bookies set up a mini telephone exchange using heavy transmission systems.”

Since April 15,the Jaipur police in several raids confiscated at least 280 cellphones, seven laptops,15 LCD screens,a large number of set top boxes and registers with detailed logs of betting. Cash running up to lakhs was also retrieved during the raids.

Though the local police have not carried out any further interrogation of those arrested, the call details of all the confiscated SIM cards are being retrieved and investigated.

Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said,“The call records of all the confiscated mobile numbers are being investigated. Some very crucial clues leading to the spot fixing could come up through this exercise.”

A copy of the case details and records of the confiscated material has already been handed over to the Mumbai police. The Delhi police is yet to get in touch with the officials here.

A large number of the accused who were arrested during the raids over the last few weeks have managed to come out on bail as betting is a bailable offence.

However, the police have booked them under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code for using SIM cards with fake identities.
