At a time when the Trinamool Congress finds itself in an embarrassing situation over not being in favour of Pranab Mukherjee as the UPA presidential nominee,West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan has come out in support of the Union Finance Minister’s name for the top post.

At a function in south Kolkata,Narayanan said: “I believe Pranab Mukherjee is the fittest person to become the President of India.’’

Though no official word has come so far from the Writers’ Buildings over the Governor’s remark, sources close to the Chief Minister said she would not take Narayanan’s support to Pranab lightly. “The Governor could support Pranabbabu but he should not have said it openly. This will definitely once again sour the relations between the two,” a party leader said.

The bonhomie between Narayanan and Mamata began with the latter coming to power. However,it soon fizzled out after Narayanan expressed his views on increasing campus violence.
