A three-month-old girl child is battling for life in a government child care hospital here after being allegedly battered by her father. Police have arrested the accused on the basis of a complaint filed by the girl’s mother who said her husband did not want a girl child.

The child,Afrin, born to Omar Farooq,an automobile painter and his second wife Reshma Banu (19),was first brought to Bowring Hospital here on April 7 with a complaint that she had been throwing up blood, apart from visible signs of injuries on the body, including bite marks.

After Afrin was admitted,Reshma lodged a complaint with the police that her daughter was attacked by Omar in her absence on April 7 at their home in the congested K G Halli area of the city.

She told the police that her husband had been demanding a dowry of Rs 1 lakh ever since they got married 14 months ago and that he was very upset when she bore him a daughter.

“It seems the father sent his wife away on an errand on April 7 and promised to look after the child but attacked her instead,” said an assistant commissioner of police investigating the case. Omar has denied attacking his child in any manner.

At the Vani Vilas hospital for children, where Afrin was referred to and has been kept in the intensive care unit since Sunday,Medical Superintendent Dr Gangadhar said in an official statement that the child was “haemorrhaging in the brain” and would have to be kept on life support and observed for 48 hours.

Hospital officials said there were numerous marks of external injuries on the child’s body.

”The baby is very critically wounded. This has been happening for a while and the father has been abusing the child — he has burnt her with cigarette stubs and even bitten her. There has been lots of physical abuse. In the latest episode,he has flung the child and there is intra-cranial damage,” said a source in the hospital.

”The father seems to be a violent person and the mother has not been able to do anything… She is miserable right now. He has warned her against speaking out,” added the source.

Following preliminary investigations, the Bangalore East police reported that Omar had attempted to kill his daughter since he did not want a girl child.

According to sources,he is also an alcoholic.

“He tried to kill the child in different ways, including smothering,” said DCP (East) B Krishna Bhat.

The hospital sources, meanwhile, said Reshma tried to change her statement on Monday evening, suggesting that she was not sure if it was her husband who had attacked Afrin.
