Barasat rape-murder: PIL seeks SIT probe

A PIL was on Monday filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking intervention in the probe into the alleged rape and killing of a college student in Barasat on June 6.

A PIL was on Monday filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking intervention in the probe into the alleged rape and killing of a college student in Barasat on June 6.

The petition urged the court to set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case under the monitoring of the High Court. The case will come up for hearing on Tuesday.

On June 6,the college student was allegedly raped and murdered by local youths while she was returning home. After the incident,West Bengal Food Minister Jyotipriya Mallick went to the village but protesting locals forced him to leave. The residents continued their agitation for a few days demanding punishment of the culprits.

The state government,meanwhile,has handed over the probe to the CID. The PIL sought an order to stop the CID investigation.

Meanwhile,residents of Kamduni village hit the streets on Monday to protest against the alleged rape-murder.
