Bangla artist’s 8-yr wait ends,can go home

A 75-year-old Bangladeshi sculptor who was arrested for possessing fake Indian currency eight years ago when he came to visit the Ajmer Sharif dargah,will finally walk free.

A Delhi court pronounced Rashid Ahmed guilty on Wednesday,but both the sculptor and his daughter-in-law,who was arrested with him,have already been in jail for more than the seven years for which they were sentenced.

Rashid Ahmed’s work includes Mukto Bangla (Free Bangla),on the country’s 1971 war of liberation,which is on display at the Islamic University in Kushtia.

On July 8,The Sunday Express reported that they were languishing in jail as the trial was delayed. The Bangladesh high commission had sent several reminders to the government requesting help to expedite the trial.

PTI quoted ASJ Vimal Kumar Yadav as saying,“Rashid Ahmed is stated to be a renowned artist. The newspaper reports also vouch for it,which all goes to strengthen the fact that the convicts were the victims of circumstances and temptation…”
