AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka Ghulam Nabi Azad will embark on a two-day visit to the state from Saturday to ascertain the views of state Congress leaders about the pros and cons of an alliance with the JD(S) in the Lok Sabha elections.

While top JD(S) leaders, including H D Deve Gowda and H D Kumaraswamy, have publicly ruled out any alliance with the Congress, backchannel negotiations between the two sides have been on. Kumaraswamy had called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi early this month.

While the Central leadership of the Congress is open to the idea,a section of state Congress leadership, particularly former chief minister S M Krishna, has been opposing any pre-poll tie-up.
