West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan on Wednesday termed the incident of assault on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,Finance Minister Amit Mitra and heckling of other ministers outside Planning Commission office as “shocking” and “pre-meditated”. The Governor also described the incident as a blot on democratic values. He said that the CPM Politburo should come forward to tender an apology for the incident.

In a press statement,Narayanan said,“The shocking pre-meditated assault on the Chief Minister,Finance Minister and other senior ministers of West Bengal in the national capital yesterday is an extremely unfortunate incident and a blot on India’s cherished democratic values. The incident deserved to be condemned in the strongest terms. Those responsible for the attack and their instigators have forfeited their right to function within a democratic framework. This kind of attack on a democratically elected Chief Minister,Finance Minister and their Cabinet colleagues is unprecedented in India’s modern history and is serious enough to warrant a public apology by the Politburo of the CPM.”

Reacting to the Governor’s comment,CPM state secretary Biman Bose said,“The Governor is a veteran IPS officer. He might be knowing how police operate and how other political parties operate. But he does not have proper knowledge on how Politburo, central and state committees of CPM operate. That is why he said that the CPM Politburo should come forward to tender apology. It is his ignorance.”

The reaction from the Governor comes as the ruling party is holding protests across the state. TMC supporters on Wednesday ransacked several Left party offices. Fresh violence erupted in North Dinajpur,South Dinajpur,Cooch Behar,Malda,Siliguri,South 24 Paraganas,Birbhum,Bankura and Burdwan. As per the police,36 CPM offices were ransacked Wednesday.
