Facing charges of financial impropriety,Assam Rifles Director General Rameshwar Roy has been repatriated to the Army following an approval to this effect by the Home Ministry.

Roy,who was heading the Shillong-based paramilitary force, has been accused of using official funds to purchase items of personal use during his earlier tenure as the 16 Corps Commander. An internal inquiry had pointed to “monetary discrepancies”,after which the Army had sought his recall.

The repatriation had been awaiting the decision of the Home Ministry which has administrative control over the Assam Rifles.

A replacement for Roy has not yet been announced, officials said. Roy,who belongs to the J-K Rifles regiment, took over as Director General in December 2010.

The allegations against him suggest that a “hairdressing” bill of his wife was also reimbursed to the officer as official expense. Roy has denied the charges.
