Defence Minister A K Antony’s “clean image” became the target of attack by Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, with many of them saying preserving “the image” had become more important than taking decisions that would bolster India’s defence preparedness.

Participating in the discussion on the functioning of the ministry, many Opposition members said India’s armed forces were suffering because of an indecisive ministry that was afraid of taking bold steps that were required urgently.

“No work,no mistake and clean image is a dangerous philosophy,” said BJP’s Balbir Punj who initiated the debate.

“Antony saab, you take strict action against agents and middlemen…don’t leave your officers and soldiers at the mercy of bureaucrats…make our armed forces self-reliant in matters of arms and ammunition…provide justice to your officers and soldiers and approve the one-rank-one-pension policy. Please take the decisions. This House and the entire country will be with you,” he said.

Avtar Singh Karimpuri of the BSP said if the minister was so concerned about his clean image,he could take the Opposition members into confidence about the decisions he was taking.

“You are honest, there is no question about that. But you need to remain honest after doing something. If you don’t do anything, obviously you will be clean. The weapons that you have not purchased…the requirements that you have not met…this is all dangerous,” he said.

M S Gill of the Congress,D P Tripathi of the NCP,Shashi Bhushan Behra of the BJD,T Devender Goud of the TDP,D Raja of the CPI,T K Rangarajan of the CPM and Rajeev Chandrashekhar were some of the other speakers.
