The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has written to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) demanding setting up of a National Security Guards (NSG) hub in the wake of recent terror threats.

The local administration has also asked the Centre to deploy NSG guards ahead of the Independence Day celebration and later create a permanent hub.

Chief Secretary Anand Prakash is learnt to have written to the MHA citing the location of the islands and their proximity to Thailand,Burma and Indonesia.

Speaking to The Indian Express over the phone,Prakash said,“The proposal has been sent to the Home Ministry and the process is on. We are far away and need to be prepared for any emergency.”

The administration also cited emergency situations like tsunamis and other natural disasters, besides terror threats. It sought that the hub be equipped with choppers and NSG personnel who will provide training to other security forces deployed on the islands. Ministry sources, however, claimed that the decision has not been taken yet.
