Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal will be sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister at the Ranjit Avenue grounds in Amritsar on January 21. The decision followed the resignation of Bikramjit Singh Majithia, the youngest minister in the Badal Cabinet, who was also Public Relations Minister and is Sukhbir’s brother-in-law,from the Majitha seat in Amritsar. Sukhbir is expected to contest from here.

Incidentally,it is for the first time that a minister will take the oath of office outside Chandigarh and Mohali.

According to sources,Sukhbir might be given the portfolios of Home — which usually goes to the Chief Minister — Civil Aviation,Public Relations,Water Supply and Sanitation,Science and Technology and Environment and Non-Conventional Energy.

After meeting Governor Gen S F Rodrigues (retd),Majithia told reporters outside the Raj Bhavan,“I have submitted my resignation to CM Parkash Singh Badal. Nobody asked me to resign. I did it willingly, and have sounded the CM so that Sukhbir can contest from Majitha.”

“I want to thank God that I became a Cabinet minister at a young age,and both the Chief Minister and the party president provided me an opportunity to serve the people. I want Sukhbir to contest from Majitha,so that the entire Majha region could see development,” he said. He added,“We have won the Assembly and municipal elections largely because of Sukhbir’s efforts. His elevation was long due.”
