Facing criticism over rise in crime and poor law and order in the state, the UP government on Friday removed DGP Ambrish Chandra Sharma and appointed Deo Raj Nagar in his place.

A 1976-batch IPS officer,Nagar took over on Friday evening. Sharma was posted in the Home Guards Headquarters as Commandant General.

Known as a non-controversial officer and close to Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav,Nagar was considered the front-runner for the DGP’s post after the SP came to power last year. But he was posted as head of the Police Promotion and Recruitment Board while Sharma became the DGP. He will retire in December this year. Sharma was posted as DGP soon after Akhilesh Yadav took over as CM last year.
