British police Monday detained a cabin crew of Air India for allegedly smuggling 50 cigarette crates, each of which could contain up to 10,000 cigarettes.
The crew member of the AI flight from Mumbai, who is believed to have admitted to his crime, was detained for eight hours before the national carrier bailed him out on a surety of 5,000 pounds.
An inquiry has been initiated against the cabin crew member, who has also been suspended. Any action against him will be decided only after the internal inquiry is complete, a spokesperson for Air India said.
The crew member was detained while he was on his way to a hotel from Londons Heathrow airport.
Smuggling up to 65,000 cigarettes into the United Kingdom, involving duty evasion of less than 10,000 pounds, for first time can invite a sentence of community service or tagging-under-curfew but not a jail term.
