Ahead of Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh’s visit to Malkangiri district on Monday,Maoists blasted an anti-personnel Claymore mine targeting a party of Special Operation Group personnel in Kalimela block on Sunday afternoon, injuring one of them.

Malkangiri SP Aniruddha Singh said the incident happened at Kanijodi forests of Kalimela when the SOG personnel were combing the area. “One of them received mine splinters in his leg. There was an exchange of fire between our forces and the Maoists,” said Singh.

On Saturday, the Maoists had organised a meeting in the interior villages demanding withdrawal of security forces from the area. They also demanded that Operation Greenhunt be stopped in the area. Singh said security has been tightened in the district after the blast.

This would be Ramesh’s first visit to Malkangiri since becoming the Rural Development Minister.
