After Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed,a group of civil society members from Kashmir have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking unconditional return of parliament attack-convict Afzal Gurus body.
The way Mohammad Afzal Gurus rights in the matter of the fate of his body and final burial have been denied represents a serious violation of human rights and a gross disregard of the sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, reads the resolution signed by 850 civil society members from Kashmir. The signatories also include lawyers,doctors,journalists,businessmen,government employees and students. The resolution has been sent to Prime Minister Singh and a copy of it has also been sent to Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde,Speaker Lo Sabha Meira Kumar and J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The Indian State has no legal or moral right over the body of Mohammad Afzal Guru and it must be returned immediately to his family.
The resolution has said that Guru didnt get a fair trial and termed his secret hanging as a grave human rights violation. The people of Jammu and Kashmir believe Mohammad Afzal Guru was denied a fair trial,the opportunity to contest the rejection of his mercy petition,and an opportunity to meet his family before his secret execution, the resolution reads. It is a grave human rights violation. India considers his dead body as seditious and the body has been subjected to continued imprisonment.
Seeking an end to the denial of civil and political rights to the people of Kashmir,the civil society members in their resolution has demanded immediate return of Gurus body. The denial of the return of his dead body only strengthens the understanding of the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the Indian State continues to disregard the civil and political rights of the people in its ongoing belligerent policy for the control of territory, says the resolution. We,the undersigned,demand that the Government of India end its policy of denial of civil and political rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,and specifically,we demand that the body of Mohammad Afzal Guru be returned immediately and unconditionally.
