People in the country are now spoilt for choice in deciding which gigs to attend during the week. The most discernible reason for this is the demand for new live music. Companies have been setting up various properties that bring international musicians to India, providing platforms for those within the country, and without.
The latest entrant is Lucid. Less than a year old, they announced their first property,Space, earlier this month. It will be a monsoon showcase featuring six international DJs over the next four months. We were required to have a portfolio in India to organise gigs,so that led to Lucid, and I built a full-fledged property,Space, says Kenneth DSouza,co-founder,Lucid.
After living in Canada for five years and setting up an event company which also dealt with music,DSouza returned to his hometown Mumbai two years ago. He wanted to get involved with the music scene in India, and the idea for Lucid stemmed from there.
In choosing the musicians for the inaugural edition of the series, there were a number of criteria the company considered. We have focused on artistes who are more experimental than commercial, says DSouza. In addition, each of these DJs plays a different sub-genre of electronic music, and they all belong to different countries.
The organisations first test will be on July 11 at the Big Bang Bar and Cafe,Bandra,as they host the London-based DJ Max Cooper. The same series will also play in Pune,at Kue Bar in The Westin, after the Mumbai gigs.
The most popular musician on the list,Coopers sub-genre is primarily minimal techno with hints of ambient music. All the acts that will open for each of these musicians have been chosen from among the Mumbai booking agency Krunks artistes Pune DJ Big City Harmonics (for the Mumbai gig),and Mumbai DJ duo Beatstatic (for the Pune gig).
Later next month,Los Angeles-based trap and moombahton artiste DJ D!rty Aud!o will play in Mumbai on July 25 and in Pune the next day. Romanian experimental and bass heavy DJ Liar will perform on August 8 and 9,Chloe Herry, aka CloZee,a French glitch-hop/glitchstep/hip hop DJ on August 22 and 23,and Dutch old school house DJ/producer Bakermat on September 5 and 6. The final act, scheduled for October, will be announced later in the year. Lucid plans to make Space an annual property through these gigs.
