Narayan Sai,son of rape accused self-styled godman Asaram Bapu,was arrested by the Delhi Police crime branch at Pipli in Kurukshetra,Haryana,on Tuesday,almost two months after he went absconding.
Narayan was booked in a rape case in Surat days after his father was arrested by Rajasthan Police for allegedly raping a minor at his Jodhpur ashram.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) S B K Singh said aide Hanuman and driver Ramesh who were with Narayan were also arrested. They were driving to Delhi in a Ford EcoSport,bought by a Meerut businesswoman in October,to meet a legal counsel and sign papers related to his case. Gujarat Police came to the city in October and sought our help to arrest Narayan Sai. We raided several places and traced a contact of Ramesh a few days ago. He revealed the possible hideouts of Narayan, said Singh.
A 10-member team of the Delhi crime branch reached Ludhiana Monday afternoon on a tip-off that Narayan could be hiding in a cowshed or at the house of a businessman in Model Town or in Preet Vihar,only to realise he had fled.
Another police team spotted him leaving the Punjab border and entering NH1 Tuesday afternoon.
By 6 in the evening,ACP Kamal Malhotra,who hails from Punjab,left for NH1 with a 31-member team in nine vehicles. They blocked all diversions on the highway. One of our teams spotted the Ford EcoSport and followed it for about an hour. We nabbed them at a petrol pump in Pipli, said a police official.
Narayan was formally placed under arrest at around 1 am on Wednesday and brought to the crime branch office in Rohini. Sources said he was wearing a turban and a tracksuit and tried to fake his identity. His driver claimed his name was Suresh,not Ramesh.
The police recovered a stove,utensils,a bag of rice and pulses and Rs 2.61 lakh from Narayan. His aide Hanuman had Rs 13,500.
We recovered six mobile phones from Narayan. He was using one at a time and kept the other mobiles switched off. He had visited Jaipur,Ludhiana,Haridwar,Valsad and also spent a few days in Delhi. He is being handed over to Gujarat Police, said Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) R S Yadav.
Narayan had chosen Tuesday to enter Delhi as he thought the police would be busy on election eve. There was a 17-year-old boy in
Preliminary investigation revealed the juvenile from Aurangabad had been working as a cook for Narayan for the past five years.
Sources said Gujarat Police may now book him under JJ Act for child labour as well. Narayan told the police he had Rs 5 lakh when he went absconding. In the past two months,he spent about Rs 2.5 lakh,mostly on fuel.
Gujarat Police later got a 24-hour transit remand to produce Narayan in a Surat court,which has issued warrants against the rape accused.
