4 houses crumble,10 injured

Ten persons were injured in four separate incidents of building collapse on Wednesday.

In the first incident,two labourers were seriously injured when an under-construction house collapsed around 1 pm in Gandhinagar in East Delhi. While the fire officials rescued two labourers,identified as Pramod and Devender,from the debris,rescue operations were on till evening. Labourers at the site said officials suspect another labourer,Vijay Pal,is still trapped under the concrete.

Officials said construction work was being done hastily by the contractor,which resulted in the collapse. “We are verifying if the building met the norms of the MCD,” said a senior police officer. The police said they would initiate action against the contractor,identified as Shamim.

In the second incident,a double-storey house collapsed around 1 pm after heavy rains in Sangam Vihar area,leaving a woman and her two daughters injured. The house belonged to one Hari Singh,a driver. The police said the foundation of the house was not strong. “Singh’s wife Rajvati (40) and his two daughters,Shashi (18) and Sangeeta (20),were in the house,” said an official. They were rescued by fire officials and taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Rajvati’s condition is critical.

In the third incident,a building collapsed in Karol Bagh’s Prasad Nagar area in which three labourers were injured. According to the police,the labourers were working in an under-construction building in the afternoon when the incident occurred. The fourth house collapse took place in Bhalswa Dairy area in North Delhi where two persons were injured.
