Almost a fortnight after a class XI student was allegedly gangraped by her boyfriend and his three friends, three of the four accused — all minors — were arrested during the last 24 hours. The main accused, the girl’s boyfriend, surrendered at a police station in Shimla on Wednesday. Two others were arrested from Jalandhar and Chhapra, respectively on Thursday. The fourth accused — who reportedly made an MMS of the incident and uploaded it on the Net,and is believed to be the son of a ruling party politician — is absconding.

State Woman Commission member Chandramukhi Devi said: “The girl has identified four students, all minors. We suspect one of them enjoys good connection.”

On July 24,the victim had told the Commission that the police had refused to lodge a case on the day of the incident,July 14. After DGP Abhyanand’s intervention, following a request by the Commission,an FIR was registered at the city’s Women’s Police Station.

The victim’s boyfriend surrendered at a Shimla police station. Confirming this,Himchal Pradesh Additional DGP (Law and Order) S R Mardi said the accused was in Shimla for a training in computer application. “We have informed the Patna police about his surrender and are awaiting for the police party to reach us for handing over his custody,” he said.

Abhyanand said,“We will use the CD of the incident as an exhibit of investigation, but have to first verify its authenticity.”
