In the biggest jailbreak in the state,23 inmates of the Chittorgarh district jail in southern Rajasthan overpowered three sentries guarding the jail and escaped on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 6.45 am. The inmates were being given tea when they attacked the guards, stole a gun and a set of keys and escaped, said Director General of Police (Jails) Omendra Bharadwaj, adding that it was a case of gross negligence.
Bharadwaj, who along with other senior police officials reached the spot on hearing about the jailbreak, added that the three police personnel on duty, who suffered minor injuries, had been suspended.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has constituted a high-power committee to look into the incident and scrutinise security in jails across the state.
Though an alert was sounded across the state, none of the fugitives were nabbed till evening. The police in the neighbouring states of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have also been put on alert.
According to Bharadwaj, the jail personnel took no precautions while serving the morning tea. One of the sentries was armed and he went into the prisoners cell with his weapon, while the other guard stood nearby. It was a simple matter for the inmates to overpower them, he said.
