19 injured in Nepal plane crash

A Nepal Airlines Aircraft carrying 19 people including an infant had a miraculous escape when it fell into a river near Jomsom along Tibet border Wednesday morning.

A Nepal Airlines Aircraft carrying 19 people including an infant had a miraculous escape when it fell into a river near Jomsom along Tibet border Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred as the Twin Otter airplane on a flight from Pokhara skidded off the runway while trying to land at Jomsom airport in a mountainous region and crashed into the Kali Gandaki river,Rhishikesh Sharma,an official at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said.

Police said the wheel of the plane skidded off the runway and veered toward the right and crashed on the river bank. The front of the plane was wrecked,but the rear section was intact.

There were ten Japanese,and nine Nepalese including crew members,officials confirmed. Rescuers pulled the injured passengers and crew from the plane.

Seven people including two Japanese,three crew members and two Nepalese were among those seriously injured in the incident.

Jomsom is the main attraction for tourists going for mountain trekking in Nepal.

The area is popular with foreign trekkers visiting the Mount Annapurna area and Hindu pilgrims visiting the revered Muktinath temple. With PTI
