The Union Urban Development ministry has given the go-ahead to 17 cities last week to procure around 4,200 new buses under the urban transport scheme announced in the first stimulus package.

Of the 63 cities which are eligible to apply for Central assistance under the special scheme for a limited period,so far around 20 have come forward, said urban development secretary M Ramachandran. While 17 proposals have been appraised by the centre, the rest will be taken up subsequently.

“Given that it is a special scheme intended to provide a stimulus to urban infrastructure,we may extend the last date for receiving proposals from states,” Ramachandran said.
