World No. 5 Saina Nehwal’s quest to outdo the Chinese in the Olympic year was hampered when she lost to China’s Xiao Jia Chen,ranked 40,in the second round of the Asian Badminton Championship on Thursday. After the scores were level at 2-2 in the first game and 3-all in the second,the Chinese never allowed the Indian to get on par and went on to win 21-13,21-16. On Wednesday,Saina had got the better of Kaori Imabeppu of Japan.

With regard to Olympic qualification,the significant loss was that of the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju. They lost to Korea’s Sa Rang Kim and Hye In Choi 21-14,11-21,21-17. Jwala and Diju are currently ranked No.16 in the world and will have to maintain or improve their ranking in order to make the cut for the London Games.
