Paes-Black make their way into final

Top seeds Leander Paes and Cara Black stormed into the final of the Wimbledon mixed doubles event with a straight-set victory over Stephen Huss and Virginia Ruano Pascual on Friday.

Top seeds Leander Paes and Cara Black stormed into the final of the Wimbledon mixed doubles event with a straight-set victory over Stephen Huss and Virginia Ruano Pascual on Friday.

The India-Zimbabwe pair beat their 12th seeded opponents 6-4 6-4 in a 71-minute semi-final contest. Paes and Black,who won the US Open mixed doubles last year,were rusty at the start and were broken in the second game by the Australian-Spanish pair who took an early 3-0 lead.

The top seeds,however,fought back with stunning ferocity to break their opponents in the fifth and seventh games to pocket the first set 6-4 in 35 minutes.

The second set went on serve till the fourth game,after which Paes and Black tightened their game to break their opponents once and win the set in 36 minutes,and with it the match.

In the summit clash,Paes and Black will meet the winners of the other semi-final match between ninth seeds Mark Knowles (Bahamas)/Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany) and unseeded Jamie Murray (Great Britain)/Liezel Huber (USA). The Indian,who lost in the first round of the men’s doubles,is looking for his fifth mixed doubles title.

On Thursday,Paes and Black reached the semi-finals with a comfortable win over Andre Sa and Ai Sugiyama,but in contrast,Huss and Ruano Pascual had to fight hard against the fourth-seeded duo of Su-wei Hsieh and Kevin Ullyett,eventually defeating them 6-3 5-7 9-7.
