Top seed Koneru Humpy got off to a flier with a finely crafted victory over Grandmaster Pia Cramling of Sweden in the first round of the IS Bank Attaturk Women’s Grand Prix chess tournament.
Playing black,Humpy displayed top form to beat Cramling. Humpy went for the Nimzo Indian defence and it was a highly satisfying victory for the second highest ranked woman in the world. Playing a topical variation,Humpy managed to equalize early in the middle game and both players fought for supremacy on different flanks.
Earlier on,Humpy looked in a spot of bother on the queen side but a quick deployment of forces on this flank halted white’s advances and gave the Indian time to work out her counter-play on the king side.
The Andhra girl showed determination in carrying out her attack and even as Cramling sought some solace after trading the queens her comfort did not last long as a fresh wave of attack came from other pieces. Humpy won a rook for knight and clinched the issue in 50 moves.
