The government has cleared commerce secretary Rahul Khullars appointment as the new chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). Khullar is expected to assume charge on Monday as the tenure of JS Sarma ended on May 13.
The Trai chairman has a tenure of three years in office or till 65 years of age, whichever is earlier. Khullar, who is a 1975 batch officer of the Union Territory cadre of the Indian Administrative Service, will serve for a three-year period as he is currently 59.
However,no official communication from the government was made till late Sunday evening. According to sources,Khullars candidature was approved by the Prime Ministers Office late on Saturday evening. When contacted,Khullar would only say,No comments.
The appointment of the new chairman comes when the telecom sector is at a critical stage where the government has to take a decision on its recommendations on conducting 2G spectrum auctions by August 31 in lieu of the 122 licences cancelled by the Supreme Court on February 2.
