Kerala stun Punjab

Visakhapatnam: Senior batsman Yuvraj Singh was dismissed for a first-ball duck as Kerala stunned Punjab by 46 runs in a quarter-final match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Put into bat on a placid strip at the Port Stadium,Kerala piled up a commendable 320 for six riding on twin centuries by opener Vasudevan Jagadeesh (119) and middle-order batsman Sachin Baby (104 no). In reply,Punjab were bowled out for 274 in 47.3 overs as Gurkeerat Singh (99) and Mandeep Singh (81)’s half centuries went in vain. Kerala achieved the upset win without their premier pacer S Sreesanth.

Brief Scores: Kerala 320/6 (Vasudevan Jagadeesh 119,Sachin Baby 104,Yuvraj Singh 3/39); Punjab 274 in 47.3 over (Gurkeerat Singh 99,Mandeep Singh 81,Prashanth Parmeshwaran 3/40).

Narwal five-for in Delhi win

Visakhapatnam: Gautam Gambhir made an useful contribution of 44 coming in to bat at No 4 as Delhi thrashed Gujarat by eight wickets to enter the semi-final of the National One Day Championship for Vijay Hazare Trophy. Delhi captain Rajat Bhatia opted to field on a two-paced wicket and seamer Sumit Narwal responded brilliantly with career-best figures of five for 21 in seven overs to skittle Gujarat for 126 in 32 overs. In reply,Delhi knocked off the runs in only 28.4 overs with Gambhir remaining unbeaten on 44 from 67 deliveries with six fours and a six. The senior pro was supposed to bat at No 3 but was forced to come in at No 4 due to different reason. “Gautam was suppose to come in at No 3. But as soon as he went to attend nature’s call and a wicket fell at the same time. Since, there was a possibility of getting ‘timed-out’,Mithun Manhas was promoted up the order,” a member of the Delhi squad said.

Brief Scores: Gujarat 126 in 32 overs (Akshar Patel 30,Sumit Narwal 5/21); Delhi 130/2 (G Gambhir 44 no,U Chand 28)
