Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna won their first title together by beating third seed Poles Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-4 3-6 10-5 in the $ 1,700,475 Dubai Open on Saturday.
After teaming up this season, the Indians had reached semifinals at two tournaments Chennai in January and Open 13 in Marseille and eventually went the distance against the same pair to which both Bhupathi and Bopanna had lost in the US Open last year with their respective partners,Leander Paes and Aisam Qureshi. It was the Polish power which had also pipped Bhupathi and Paes for a place in the final of the World Tour Finals in the Indian veterans last tournament as partners.
This was the fourth Dubai title for Bhupathi, and his 50th career title and it also marked Bopannas first ATP 500 win. Dubai is even better than playing at home, the stadium is bigger than Chennai and its amazing to see so many Indians here, Bhupathi said.
Federer beats Murray
Roger Federer beat Andy Murray 7-5 6-4 for his 72nd tour title and his fifth Dubai title without dropping a set all week. He broke Murray at 5-5 in the first set as the Briton’s serving dipped. The Swiss,30,then broke again to go 3-1 ahead in the second set but Murray produced two brilliant lobs to square the set at 3-3.
Federer attacked Murray’s second serve to force him to net a backhand for a decisive 5-4 lead and served out the match.
