Australia’s World Cup defence got off to a poor start on Sunday as their batswomen failed to deal with a moderate chase against a committed New Zealand,going down by 13 runs in their Group B match in Sydney.

New Zealand scored 205,with captain Haidee Tiffen (57) top scoring. Australia were 132 for 6 in 33 overs when rain hit,forcing the match to be decided by the D/L method. Kate Pulford’s six-over spell of 3/30 rattled the hosts.

In another match,the West Indies all but sealed their place in the Super Six after beating South Africa by two wickets in Newcastle.
