The dates of the national camp for the archers ahead of the World Cup Stage 3 to be held in Medellin,Columbia, from July 15-21 havent been decided as yet. Reason: Some of the women archers have requested the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to shift the venue of the national camp Army Sports Institute,Pune after their teammate,Pratima Boro, committed suicide in May. Boro was found hanging in her room within the premises of the Army Sports Institute on May 3.
A group of archers had met the SAI director general Jiji Thomson after Boros suicide to request the same. What they told me was that they were troubled because of the suicide, SAI,director general,Thomson told The Indian Express. We have to take their request into consideration before deciding where the national camp will be held next, he added.
Now SAI is looking for an alternate venue. Intially, after consulting the Archery Association of India,SAI had decided that the camp would continue in Pune, where national archers have been training. We could organise the camp in Delhi, but the problem is we dont have catering facilities at any of the venues. I am talking to the IRCTC officials, and if they are ready to provide food,we may hold it here, Thomson said.
The archers wanted the camp shifted out of Pune immediately, but as the World Cup in Shanghai in May was around the corner they had to continue training in Pune.
