The Maharashtra Governor last week forwarded a letter by MP Jaya Prada and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh to the state home department, seeking pardon for actor Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Supreme Court,Umesh Kashikar, public relations officer of the Raj Bhawan said.
The letter from Amar Singh and Jaya Prada seeking pardon for Sanjay Dutt was sent to the home department without any remarks or comments, Kashikar said. Jaya Prada and Singh had met the Governor on March 26 requesting him to pardon Dutt, convicted under the Arms Act in connection with the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai.
Out on bail since 2007,Dutt has already spent 18 months in prison and the apex court has set a four-week deadline for the actor to surrender.
Additional chief secretary (home) Amitabh Rajan said that it is a routine procedure.
Any letter given to the Governor is routinely forwarded to the home department. It does not imply the Governor is endorsing the pardon plea. I have not received the letter from the Governors office as yet,but have read about it in the newspapers, he added.
