Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf, dropped by the ICC for the Champions Trophy, might have passed on crucial information about pitch and weather conditions ahead of international cricket matches to bookies in India,Mumbai Police sources revealed on Monday.

Crime Branch sources said that actor Vindoo Dara Singh, arrested in the IPL betting racket, has told interrogators that Rauf used to pass on information to bookies Pawan and Sanjay Jaipur before the matches were played.

“Vindoo has said that apart from IPL matches,it was important for the bookies to have someone who could tip them off about pitch conditions and weather conditions for international matches played outside India,so that bets could be placed on the overseas matches accordingly. He has claimed that Rauf used to pass on such information to the Jaipur brothers Pawan and Sanjay,” said a Crime Branch source.

“We are probing this angle as part of our investigation, but the custodial interrogation of the Jaipur brothers or Rauf would have been crucial to get to the bottom of this. Whether Rauf took any wrong decisions to influence the outcome of any matches is also being probed,” the source added.

According to the Crime Branch,Vindoo had helped Pawan and Sanjay flee to Dubai on May 16. The two bookies, who had checked into Novotel hotel in Juhu, were allegedly driven to the Mumbai airport in Vindoo’s car.

‘Left abruptly’

Rauf, who was also also booked a room in the swanky Juhu hotel by the Jaipur brothers, left the country abruptly on May 17 after allegedly being tipped off by Vindoo.

The Crime Branch has seized two shopping bags from the cargo hold of the Delhi airport, containing expensive jeans, watches, shirts and shoes, that were allegedly gifts sent by Pawan Jaipur for Rauf.
