Families of a lawyer and a nurse found dead in an apartment in Andheri East last week have told police that they were unaware of a relationship between the two. Both families recorded their statements with police on Monday.

The police have also received post-mortem reports of Vivek Gupta (33) and Khyati Gohil (35) from Cooper Hospital. “The hospital has reserved its opinion about cause of death. We will await results of the histopathology tests from the forensic science laboratory,” said an officer from MIDC police station.

On September 3, police broke into Gupta’s apartment in Andheri’s PMGP Colony after neighbours complained about a foul smell. They found decomposed bodies of Gupta and Gohil on two beds with saline tubes attached to their arms. Gohil, the police said, held a syringe in her right arm, apart from a suicide note.

“There appears to be a gap of roughly three to four hours between the deaths but we are not sure of the sequence of events yet,” the officer added. The substance injected believed to have caused the deaths has not been identified, the police said.

Shailesh Pasalwar, senior inspector, MIDC police station said the motive remains unknown. “Gohil’s family has confirmed that handwriting on the letter is hers, but we do not know what the motive is. Both Gohil’s and Gupta’s families said they did not know about their relationship,” he said.
