A 75-year-old Ayurvedic doctor was attacked by a robber at her south Mumbai clinic Tuesday afternoon, police said. The woman, Madhukanta Badshah, a Breach Candy resident, was entering her clinic on Abdul Rehman Street when the accused snatched her bag, hit her and fled. Badshah, officers said, sustained injuries to her head. They are going through CCTV footage in the area to track down the accused.

Police said the incident took place at 1.30 pm when Badshah, who resides with her 102-year-old mother at Breach Candy, had gone to court for some work. From there, she went to a local bank and then headed to Badshah apartment, where she has an office on the third floor.

“As she was entering the clinic, the accused approached her and identified himself as a carpenter. He told her someone from the office had called him for work,” an officer said.

When Badshah asked details about the person who had called, the accused was not able to answer. Suspicious, the 75-year-old asked him to leave. “As she tried to enter her clinic, the accused pulled at her handbag. When Badshah resisted, he hit her. He then fled with the bag,” the officer said.

After getting medical attention, the senior citizen approached the Pydhonie police station. An FIR was registered on charges of voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery and house trespass. An officer said Badshah had valuables worth Rs 8,000 in her bag.

“An attack on a senior citizen is a serious offence. We are going through footage from CCTV cameras installed near the building. The local crime branch is also investigating the matter,” the officer added.
